AM Update: Winter Storm Set to Bring High Impacts Today

Brought to you by Chesapeake Orthodontics

The Mid-Atlantic is set to see a high-impact winter storm move in over the next 12 hours! Widespread snow will break by early afternoon! I have been in the weather center this morning, pouring over the latest data and information.

Snow is still likely to break around lunchtime today as precip expands from southwest to northeast. Snow will begin a bit sooner across Virginia and a bit later north and east of Baltimore. Regardless, expect widespread snow by the afternoon hours.

Because of this timing, many districts have decided to close, go virtual, or dismiss early! Check with your district for details and check out jbweather.net/closings for a complete list of school alerts as of 5:30am!

Our morning run of Futureview very much backs this timing up as it brings the snow in by early afternoon. Snow will turn widespread this evening, with some bands of moderate to heavy snow developing. Our model shows that area of sleet/freezing rain mix to potentially push into Southern MD this evening as slightly warmer air lifts north. This is something we will need to watch. The snow should end by sunrise on Wednesday.

Here is an overview of precip types throughout the day. Something we will need to watch is how far north warm air is able to punch and transition moderate snow to a sleet mix. Our models are hinting this may get as far north as I-95!

The more mixing w/ sleet, and potentially even rain, that areas see, the lower the snow amounts will be. With that said, I do still like my call for areas south of Baltimore to see at least 4″. But there will be a fine line between heavy snow & sleet. Where does that line set up?

Keep in mind that in January, this same situation ended up having the mix line staying well south. Will the same happen here? Only time will tell. But with these events, I always worry that the sleet/mix line will end up further north than expected! This is something to watch with temps around freezing!

I am still expecting a general 4-7″ of snow in south Baltimore this afternoon and evening, with lighter amounts to the north. Amounts will cut off to the south as mixing is likely across Tappannock and Salisbury. The more mixing Southern MD and the DC area sees, the lower the overall amounts will be–potentially closer to 4″ than 7″.

Locally, I expect the heaviest snow to fall north of the Benedict Bridge, with areas north of Prince Frederick and La Plata having the best chances to see close to half a foot of snow. Slightly lower totals south of there due to some mixing.

I know this timing graphic is one that many people like and find helpful! Impacts begin around lunchtime, with conditions deteriorating this evening. Snow and an icy mix will cause widespread travel issues this evening with temps around 32°. This should not be a huge power outage threat, but something we’ll watch.

All in all, expect widespread, high imapcts throughout the day today! I am off to my full time job as a middle school teacher, so expect limited to no updates until 3pm this afternoon. But stay with JB Weather for the latest this evening!
