The first winter weather event of the season is on tap for portions of the Mid-Atlantic on Thursday! A developing system will move along the coast late tonight and spread moisture across the region. With cold air in place, we will likely see prolonged icing along I-81 with a brief icy mix along I-95 and to the immediate west.
Futurecast shows that moisture will spread across the region late tonight. Sleet and freezing rain will likely take hold quickly across the piedmont and mountainous areas west of I-95. Futurecast suggests they could see an extended time with the icy mix before finally warming enough to switch the precip over to all rain. However, this is likely to be almost all rain south and east of I-95
With the significant threat from icing, Ice Storm WARNINGS have already been posted for the magenta-shaded counties. This is where high impacts are likely, along with school/business closures.
Winter Weather ADVISORIES have been issued for the light purple counties for lower, but still potentially noticeable, ice amounts will be found. Some minor to moderate impacts are possible here, especially west of I-95. These counties likely will see delays tomorrow, with some areas seeing some school/business closures.
The high-elevation areas along I-81 will likely see over a quarter inch of ice late tonight and tomorrow morning. This is where those highest impacts will be centered. Between a tenth and a quarter of an inch of ice is possible for piedmont locations west of I-95. While that amount is lower, it is still impactful. Areas along I-95 will likely see less than a tenth of an inch of ice before that switch to rain happens. Southeast of I-95, heavy rain is likely, with some spots seeing 1-2″ of rain!
