Growing Confidence of Weekend Snow Chance

Brought to you by Sonder Studios

We continue to have growing confidence in a system off the coast later on this weekend. As I mentioned yesterday, if this system tracks close enough to the coast, there could be some snowfall Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning.

While it’s far from certain, the National Weather Service has already outlined much of our region under an Elevated to Moderate threat of winter weather. However, this does not suggest that the highest snow totals are likely to be along I-95. To me, this does not look like a big snow event. However, a couple to a few inches of snow could be possible if this takes the right track along the coast.

Below you will find a look at the different solutions that are possible.

Canadian Model for Sunday evening.

Track A: On the Coast- It is possible that this system takes a track right along the Atlantic beach fronts. If that were to happen, that would focus the heaviest snow northwest of I-95 with a potential mix/rain along and east of I-95. Our Canadian Model shows what this type of solution would look like.

American Model for Sunday evening.

Track B: Just off the Coast- If this system were to track just off the coastline, it would allow for more cold air to mix into this system. That would allow for a mainly snow event in the Mid-Atlantic with some of the more moderate snows along/just east of I-95. This would result in a moderate snow event where a few inches would be possible. Shown is our American Model that shows this potential.

European Model for Sunday evening.

Track C: Out to Sea- If the incoming cold air is too powerful, it will kick this system out to sea. This would lead to just light snow showers throughout the Mid-Atlantic, with only minor snowfall accumulation. This potential is shown by our European Model. It is important to note that our European Model was the most accurate with our early-January storm.

It is a bit too early to say for sure what will happen. With that said, anytime after lunchtime on Sunday appears to be fair game for some winter weather impacts. Right now, I tend to believe that our solution will end up somewhere between Tracks B and C with some snow with a couple of inches possible. But more details will come over the next couple of days.
