Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen Summer start to blossom across the region. Today will look to be another hot and humid day with the chance of afternoon and evening storms. Today will be on par with what you would expect in early July.
Air temperatures will look to top out in the lower to middle 90s across the region. Dewpoints will remain in the lower to middle 70s again for today, making it feel quite humid. This combination will help to send heat indices, or Feels Like temps, up over 100° this afternoon! You will want to take it easy if you are headed outside today.
Futurecast shows that the heat and humidity today will help serve as critical building blocks for potential storm development as a cold front moves through the region this afternoon. We could see storms, which could be strong to severe, move through the area during the late-afternoon to early-evening hours.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of our region under a Level 2 “Elevated Risk” of seeing severe weather this afternoon and evening. A similar risk level was issued yesterday but not much materialized. That was thanks to a strong atmospheric “cap” that was in place, limiting storm development. Today, we’ll see if that “cap” can be removed.
If that “cap” is indeed lifted this afternoon, we could see storms become quite strong. Any storm that develops could contain damaging winds between 60-70mph, hail up to 1″ in diameter, and locally heavy rain. There is even a low threat of a brief spin-up or two, especially along the Bay. It will be something to watch this afternoon!
Remember that severe weather forecasting is far from a guarantee of anything. The goal of these forecasts is to alert you to the potential of storms, not a promise of storms.
