Risk for Afternoon and Evening Thunderstorms

Brought to you by Dugan, McKissick, Longmore LLC

We have seen mainly clear skies across the Mid-Atlantic today, which is allowing for a decent amount of heating to occur. This is also allowing for our dewpoints to get a tad more elevated than previously thought. This is leading to the atmosphere becoming primed to support some scattered thunderstorm development this afternoon and evening.

The best atmospheric conditions look to be just to our south, across the middle/lower Chesapeake Bay region. This is where the Storm Prediction Center has now placed an Elevated Risk of severe storms for this afternoon and evening. The Elevated Risk even includes parts of southern St. Mary’s County. Much of Southern MD remains under a Marginal Risk of severe storms though.

Scattered thunderstorms look possible today across Tidewater Virginia. Locally, I think our thunderstorm risk is a touch lower, but it is not zero. Spotty thunderstorms are possible anytime this afternoon and evening, with the main time frame looking to be 3-11PM. Damaging wind gusts look to be the primary threat with a secondary threat of some hail.

Shown below is our Chesapeake’s Bounty Futurecast, which is depicting the potential for thunderstorms today. Again, thunderstorms do not look widespread, but we could definitely see a few fire up this afternoon.
