Significant Risk of Severe Weather Across the Great Lakes Region

Brought to you by G&H Jewelers, Inc.

An uncommon Significant Risk of severe weather has been issued across much of Wisconsin for today, July 28th. Severe thunderstorms, capable of widespread damaging wind gusts, large hail, and several tornadoes are forecast across portions of east-central Minnesota and much of Wisconsin late this afternoon into tonight.

Breaking down what each severe weather risk category means.

This threat of severe weather comes as a heat dome of high pressure begins to weaken and cooler air enters the Great Lakes region. As this happens this evening across the Great Lakes, storms are likely to fire. It is very possible that we see a line of storms develop on the leading edge of the cooler air. If we see this occur, it is likely that this line could be very strong and long-lived as it traverses the Great Lakes region.

In essence, we could see a derecho develop across Minnesota/Wisconsin and down throughout the Great Lakes this evening before dying out as it nears Ohio and the Appalachian Mountains. Below, our Chesapeake’s Bounty Futurecast shows how this could potentially play out.

Any and all interests across the Great Lakes region will need to stay weather-aware this evening. While a derecho is not guaranteed, strong thunderstorms capable of producing widespread damage are certainly possible. The area to watch initially will be across northwestern Wisconsin this evening. This potential line of storms will likely not reach Southern Maryland.
