Tuesday’s Forecast: Periods of Rain and Cool

Brought to you by Chesapeake Orthodontics

Yesterday we were able to catch a break from this weekend’s heat, but our quiet weather period did not last long. A non-tropical, southern system has continued to work its way northward and will provide our region with continued shower activity throughout the day. As a result, temperatures will be noticeably cooler than average, and we will have an onshore, easterly wind to contend with.

24-hour rainfall NWS analysis between 6AM Mon – 6AM Tues.

Last night, we saw the rain kick-off as showers moved northward across Virginia and into our region. While the rain was not overly heavy last night, it was persistent. Many spots south of DC were able to pick up around a quarter of an inch of rain, with higher amounts to the southwest.

Even still this morning, we continue to see bands of rain move through the southern Mid-Atlantic. You will want to carry the umbrella and rain coat with you as you head out this morning.

Chesapeake’s Bounty Futurecast simulated radar

Our Chesapeake’s Bounty Futurecast shows that we are likely to see periods of rain continue throughout the day as our system now sits just offshore, where it will meander all day. It likely will not rain all day. Rather, we are likely to see bands of showers and heavier rains set up that will work through our region throughout the day.

HRRR model forecast rainfall amount through 6AM Wednesday

Many of our computer guidance shows that rain will be the most likely today south of Route 50 and US-66. Our high-resolution modeling, as shown above, shows that we could see an additional half of an inch of rain throughout the day, with higher amounts possible further south.

All in all, I would expect a wet day with intermittent showers. We could see bands of more moderate to heavy rain try to set up by midday, but they are not likely to be widespread. Temperatures will not budge much, thanks to our easterly wind. We should see some clearing tonight, but even still, scattered showers will remain possible through tomorrow morning.

For those of you with plans this afternoon and evening, I would plan on periods of rain moving through at times, impacting outdoor activities. While it will not rain all of the time, everywhere, it will rain just enough to cause an inconvenience for those outdoors.
