Yesterday, we saw yet another winter move through and impact much of the Mid-Atlantic. The highest impacts were felted across Central VA and Southern MD, where the highest snow totals fell. This morning, our main system has exited but leftover moisture is lingering. Additional snow showers (esp. to the north) and the ice (to the south) will move through parts of the area through mid-morning.
The forecast for today shows that we will keep the chance of snow across the region through the morning. While this will not be widespread, scattered snow showers could drop a spotty coating to an additional inch of snow. We get a break in the action this afternoon before more moisture moves this evening with temps above freezing.
The high impacts will be felt south of Baltimore through the day. The region shaded in red on the map below will see snow-covered roads and interstates with widespread school closures. Medium impacts along the Mason-Dixon Line, where many communities saw 2-4″ of snow last night. That orange-shaded zone could see some snow-covered roads (especially secondary roads) with closures and delays. Further to the north, from there, we are talking about elevated impacts. Light snow fell there, limiting accumulation and road impacts. But, with leftover snow showers there, some delays are possible.
Our Cedar Point Federal Credit Union Futureview is doing a good job at showing how the leftover moisture will continue to move through the region this morning before breaking up a bit after lunchtime. However, rain showers move back in with another system passing to our northwest. Cold rain showers are possible for much of the DC area, but a wintry mix of sleet/freezing rain (shown in pink) and snow (shown in blue) is possible well northwest this evening. I will have more details on that later this morning!
