Yesterday offered up quite the active weather scene with tornado warnings and multiple reports of flash flooding. Pax River picked up 1.25″ of rain! Today will look to be another warm and humid day that will bring the chance of more afternoon severe storms as a cold front moves through.
We will see this cold front move thorough this afternoon, which will act as the “kicker” for potential storms to develop. These storms are not likely to be widespread. However, the highest rain chances today will be east of I-95. Anytime between 2-11PM looks to be fair game for these hit-and-miss storms.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed many areas along and east of I-95 under a Level 1 “Marginal Risk” of severe weather for today with far southern and eastern communities being placed under a Level 2 “Elevated Risk.” I think these risk areas are drawn appropriately. While this will not be a widespread severe outbreak today, most areas will need to stay alert for the chance of these storms.
The greatest risk today appears to come from the damaging wind threat. Any storm could contain 60-70mph wind gusts. The hail and tornado threats are low today, but there are not zero! So, we will need to monitor all storms, especially ones that develop along the Bay. These storms could also drop a quick inch of rain.
