Friday’s Forecast: Snowy Morning Ahead; Travel Impacts Developing

Brought to you by Chesapeake Orthodontics

Snow is moving into the region this morning, and today’s system will bring a widespread period of light accumulating snow south of Route 50. School districts across the area have already issued delays, and many in our southern zones are likely to transition to closures as the morning progresses.

Snow will continue to fill in between 1 AM and 8 AM, becoming widespread and steady across Southern Maryland and central Virginia. Temperatures are in the 20s and low 30s, so whatever falls will stick immediately to untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges. Expect 1–3 inches across Southern Maryland, the Northern Neck, and much of central Virginia, with lighter totals (up to 1 inch or flurries) farther north toward the DC and Baltimore metro areas.

Snow will taper off between 11 AM and 2 PM, leaving behind cold temperatures and some lingering slick spots this afternoon and evening. Winds remain light, so blowing snow is not a concern, but shaded/snowy surfaces will stay icy. Above is the latest look at Futureview simulated radar!

Through late morning, periods of light snow will continue, with the steadiest snow shifting east toward the Bay and Southern Maryland. Roads will remain snow-covered in many of our southern zones due to the cold surface temperatures. Travel impacts will be most significant between 5 AM and 10 AM, with snow-covered roads and reduced visibility likely. Some mixing may briefly occur near the Lower Bay.

Many schools have opted to delay their openings, and I suspected that most of these delays in southern zones will switch over to closures. Stay updated on all school delays and closures with our Closings Page — link is provided below.
