A Freezing Fog Advisory has been issued for southern Maryland and central Virginia through 9 AM Sunday, as temperatures are expected to fall below freezing overnight.

When fog droplets touch a surface at or below 32°, they can freeze instantly, coating roads, sidewalks, bridges, and even vehicles with a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice. This creates the classic “black ice” scenario—slick spots that are very difficult to see until you’re already on them. Visibility may also fall to a quarter mile or less at times.

If you’re headed out late tonight or early Sunday morning, please use caution. Even if roads initially appear just wet, slick spots can form rapidly, especially on bridges and untreated surfaces. Slow down, use your headlights, and give yourself extra time and space on the roads. Conditions should gradually improve after mid-morning once temperatures rise above freezing.
