NEW: Cold Weather Advisory Issued for Friday Night

Before we even start talking about any snow chances, we have to get through a much more immediate concern: dangerous cold and wind chills. Tonight into early Saturday will be all about the cold, not precipitation.

As shown on the wind chill map, temperatures combined with gusty winds will drive feels-like values into the single digits and even below zero across much of the region overnight. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 PM Friday through 10 AM Saturday, with the coldest conditions occurring late tonight and around daybreak. Even areas closer to the Bay and coast won’t be spared, as persistent winds prevent any meaningful relief from the cold.

The wind chill graphic highlights why tonight’s cold is especially dangerous. When winds are calm, your body can trap a thin layer of warmth near the skin, but strong winds strip that layer away and dramatically increase heat loss. This is why windy nights like this can cause your body temperature to drop much faster, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite in a short amount of time.

This is a serious cold setup, even before factoring in any future winter weather. Limit time outdoors tonight and early Saturday, and make sure to wear layers, hats, and gloves if you must be outside. Pets, exposed skin, and anyone without proper cold-weather gear are especially vulnerable. Once we get past this cold blast, then we can shift our attention to what comes next.
