The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments in association with the Maryland Department of the Environment, Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, and District Department of Environment has issued a Code ORANGE Air Quality Alert Tuesday for the DC Metro area, the Baltimore Metro area, and Southern Maryland for Tuesday, July 27.
In this category on the Air Quality Index (AQI), with values ranging from 101 to 150, pollution levels are considered unsafe for people who are sensitive to air pollution. Thursday’s AQI value is expected to reach 101, just inside the orange level of being unhealthy for sensitive groups. This mainly impacts people with conditions such as asthma, heart disease, lung issues, the very young and the very old. Experts say people in this category should not engage in strenuous outdoor activity on code orange days.
The weather has an impact on air pollution, particularly in the summer. On warm days, especially during a persistent stretch of high pressure like the one that will be moving in tomorrow, air quality may decline. On sunny days with light winds, the EPA says ground-level ozone concentrations rise. This is due to emissions from industrial activities and from vehicles, combined with the current weather conditions.
