The picture has begun to come into better focus as we start looking at specifics with this coastal system Sunday into Monday. Trends have shifted toward a stronger storm tracking closer to the coast.

Precipitation should spread into the region around midday Sunday, but temperatures in the upper 30s to 40s will mean most areas start as rain. As the storm strengthens offshore Sunday afternoon, colder air will begin working in from northwest to southeast, allowing rain to gradually change to snow from northwest of I-95 during the afternoon to areas southeast of I-95 around sunset.

Most of the accumulation is expected Sunday night as the storm intensifies and pulls colder air fully into the region. Areas northeast of DC and closer to the coast will likely see the most snow, with up to a foot possible along the Atlantic coastline if the system strengthens right offshore as expected. Areas along the Bay and north of DC should see a few inches of slushy accumulation overnight. Snow should taper off Monday morning into midday, but travel impacts are likely to linger through the day.

This forecast still carries uncertainty, as small track or strength adjustments could shift the rain-to-snow line or snowfall totals in either direction. Nevertheless, confidence is increasing that much of the region will see some snow and that there could be widespread impacts and closures for Monday. We’ll need to monitor this system! Additional updates to this forecast are likely as we learn more.

❄️ Rain changes to snow Sunday afternoon → evening as colder air pushes in
