Before we get to our upcoming winter storm, we need to address a dangerous surge of cold air moving in tonight. This setup will bring the coldest conditions we’ve seen this season, with wind chills becoming a major concern overnight.
Temperatures today will make a push toward seasonal averages, with highs reaching the upper 30s to low 40s for many areas under a mix of sun and clouds. Winds remain out of the northwest, keeping a cool feel in place despite the modest afternoon warm-up. Colder air remains bottled up just west of the mountains for now, but that will begin to spill eastward later this evening. As that colder air arrives, temperatures will fall quickly after sunset, especially for locations closer to and west of the Blue Ridge. Overall, today serves as a brief transition before sharper cold settles in tonight.
A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect tonight as colder air surges in and winds remain brisk. Wind chills will drop into the single digits and below zero overnight, making it feel dangerously cold for anyone spending time outdoors. The coldest conditions will occur late tonight through early Saturday morning as temperatures fall and winds continue to gust. Limit outdoor exposure if possible, and be sure to bundle up with layers, hats, and gloves if you need to be outside.
