With the First Call Forecast already issued, attention now turns to a more specific concern within this storm: ice accumulation Sunday afternoon and evening. While snow will dominate early, a change in precipitation type could significantly increase impacts for parts of the region.

As warmer air aloft moves into the region Sunday afternoon, snow will begin to transition to sleet and freezing rain, particularly across southern Maryland and central Virginia, where ice impacts are expected to be highest. These areas could see snow change to prolonged freezing rain, resulting in dangerous travel conditions, icy roadways, and an increasing risk for tree damage and scattered power outages. Farther north, including the I-95 corridor and just northwest, a brief period of sleet or freezing rain is possible before colder air works back in, while northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania should see more limited and localized icing.

Even relatively small ice accumulations can create outsized impacts, especially when combined with wind and already frozen surfaces. Ice loading on trees and power lines increases the risk for falling branches and power disruptions, while untreated roads, sidewalks, and elevated surfaces can become treacherous quickly. Preparing ahead of time—by securing loose branches, avoiding parking under trees, keeping devices charged, and limiting travel during icing—can help reduce risk as conditions deteriorate.
Bottom Line:
The overall winter storm forecast is set, but ice remains the wildcard that could sharply increase impacts Sunday afternoon and evening. Areas south and east of I-95 face the greatest risk for meaningful icing, while even brief freezing rain farther north could lead to hazardous conditions. Small temperature changes will make a big difference in how far north ice reaches and how long it lasts. Continued monitoring is critical as this storm evolves and the ice threat becomes clearer.
