Marginal Risk of Severe Storms This Afternoon

Brought to you by Professional Communication Training

With the return of the heat and humidity, today will help to encourage some scattered storms this afternoon and evening. A frontal boundary to our north will drift southward this afternoon, which could help to kick up some afternoon and evening storms. While the heat and humidity will prime the atmosphere for some storm development, other atmospheric factors, such as low wind shear, will limit the intensity of coverage of these storms. With that said, we should see at least a few showers and storms fire across Northern MD this afternoon that will drop southeastward with the frontal boundary. We may see a few rounds of storms throughout the evening and early overnight hours. This potential is shown well with our Chesapeake’s Bounty Fuurecast.

Current guidance suggests that these storms should not be widespread or overly intense. With that said though, 1 or 2 may end up being strong to severe. With this in mind, the Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 1 Marginal Risk of severe weather for this afternoon. Damaging wind gusts to 60mph are possible with these storms and there could be penny to quarter-sized hail (granted, that threat is low). The timing for potential storms looks to be focused on 3-11PM.
