Thursday’s Forecast: Another Day of Dangerous Heat

Brought to you by R.E. Graves Heating & Air Conditioning

Another hot and humid day is on tap as our heat wave continues. Highs for many of us this afternoon will et between 92-97° with dewpoints in the lower 70s. This dangerous combination will make it feel like it’s between 105-110° in many areas. This is why yet another Heat Advisory has been issued for all of our region. It will be important to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Hot and humid conditions will again lead to a very unstable environment this afternoon with elevated levels of thunderstorm energy (also known as CAPE levels). A boundary is expected to form east of the Blue Ridge Mountains and could combine with an unstable environment to produce a few strong thunderstorms this afternoon.

It seems the main threat for strong to severe thunderstorms today will occur late this afternoon and into this evening. There remains a lot of uncertainty on whether any storms that do develop will survive and/or intensify as it moves towards I-95 and our region this evening. Our Chesapeake’s Bounty Futurecast is not all that impressed with this potential and quickly fizzles out any storm development.

I can`t rule out an isolated severe threat, especially near the Chesapeake Bay where interactions with the Bay Breeze could intensify storms further. Much of our region does have a 30-40% chance of seeing widely scattered storms again today. The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of our area east of the Blue Ridge in a Marginal Risk for damaging winds. However, the main focus seems to be further north where there are better atmospheric dynamics. Nevertheless, this is something to watch today. Potential timing would likely be 3-10pm.
