Tonight’s Forecast: Storms and Periods of Heavy Rain Likely

Brought to you by Chesapeake Orthodontics

After a warm and humid day, we have seen scattered areas of showers and storms fire up across the region. This has prompted both a Flood Watch and a Severe Thunderstorm Watch (shown in pink) to be issued for our western zones, including Charles (MD), King George (MD), and Prince Georges (MD) Counties until 11pm this evening. With that said, I think everyone has a chance to get in on the rain tonight.

Chesapeake’s Bounty Futurecast simulated radar

Our Futurecast model shows that we will see this afternoon’s rain threat increase in coverage as the evening wears on. As we approach midnight, most everyone will have a chance to see rain, which could be heavy at times. We could see several rounds of storms and rain move through. This is why I believe that the threat of flooding will persist throughout the overnight hours for almost everyone.

As I mentioned, flash flooding will be the primary concern for all locations this evening. Some spots, but not everyone, could see up to 1-2″ of rain overnight. Through sunset, we also have an elevated severe weather risk. If any storms turn severe, the primary threat would come from damaging winds up to 65mph. The threat of hail and tornadoes are both rather low. With that said, we will need to stay weather aware this evening.

So as you plan out the rest of your evening, I would definitely bank on seeing scattered showers and storms move through. I would advise against outdoor activities considering the threat of severe weather and heavy rain. We could see some of the heaviest rain push through Southern Maryland just after midnight, so do not be surprised to be woken up by the sound of thunder!

Rain showers are likely to ligner into tomorrow, potentially as late as lunchtime! While the rain will not be nearly as heavy tomorrow morning, I would bring a umbrella with you as you head out!

Remember, flash flooding can happen quickly with these types of storms. Flash flooding is a life-threatening hazard that catches many people off guard. If you plan to travel this evening, be prepared to encounter flooded roadways. If you do, turn around, don’t drown!
