With another hot and increasingly humid day across the Mid-Atlantic, scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop later this afternoon and evening. While not everyone will see rain, any storm that forms could quickly become strong to severe thanks to a very unstable atmosphere fueled by the heat and humidity. With that said, a Level 2 “Elevated Risk” of severe weather has been posted across the region.

The primary threat will be damaging wind gusts, though isolated large hail cannot be ruled out. Storm coverage remains somewhat uncertain because there is no strong cold front or organized weather system acting as a trigger. This means some communities may remain completely dry while others experience torrential downpours, frequent lightning, and strong winds.

I’ll be closely monitoring leftover boundaries from storms currently well west of the Appalachians. As those features move eastward this afternoon, they could help spark thunderstorm development and allow storms to organize into clusters. If that occurs, the risk for damaging winds would increase, especially near and east of the I-95 corridor. Any time after 3 PM is fair game, but the greatest concern appears to be during the late afternoon and evening hours.

Key Details
