Forecast: Early Season Heat Expected Friday-Sunday

Brought to you by Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices PenFed Realty

Get ready for some Summer-time heat! This weekend, we will see an area of high pressure develop off the southeast coastline. We refer to this as a “Bermuda High”– thanks to its relative closeness to the island of Bermuda. This Bermuda high will help pump warm and humid conditions northward this weekend!

Temperatures will rise into the 90s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday for the first time since last Fall. Friday will be the first 90° day in the Baltimore and Washington Metropolitan Areas since last September. Saturday is forecast to be the hottest day of the weekend, with many locations reaching the mid-90s and heat indices approaching 100°. This level of heat will continue through Sunday. If all three days feature highs in the 90s, it will meet the criteria of being considered a heat wave.

I cannot rule out the chance of showers Friday morning before the warm-up. While an isolated storm is possible on Saturday (10-20% chance), the better chance of afternoon and evening storms will come on Sunday with a cold front. The chance of PM storms is around 40%, and we could see 1 or 2 become strong to severe.

The abrupt beginning of hot temperatures early in the season after a relatively cool spring brings an increased risk of heat illnesses unless proper precautions are taken for those working or recreating outdoors.

Since many outdoor events are planned this weekend in the region, be aware of the heat, and take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside this weekend. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Plan to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and seek shade from the sun. Schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments and stay hydrated with non-alcoholic beverages.
