Rain has overspread much of the region Saturday afternoon with a wintry mix falling well northwest of I-95. This all comes as a strong system moves through the region that will pump up warm air on Sunday before a cold front comes crashing through Sunday evening. As that front crosses through, winds will pick up as cold air filers in.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for much of the Mid-Atlantic that takes effect at noon on Sunday and goes through midnight. This is where win gusts up to 50-60mph will be possible and impacts could be felt. Winds will likely linger into Monday, as well.
Our modeling shows that westerly gusts up to 50-60mph are likely to be widespread Sunday afternoon and evening. We also have some models that suggest that winds could even be a bit higher. The highest gusts are the most likely in the elevated areas out west.
Even the most common items become dangerous objects when picked up and carried by the wind! When a High Wind Watch is issued, secure outdoor items such as patio furniture, sports equipment, and trash cans.
High winds can be dangerous! If possible, stay inside. When driving, slow down, keep both hands on the wheel, and keep away from high-profile vehicles. Be aware of loose outdoor items and stay clear of trees.
