Friday’s storm was a classic “thread the needle” event, and overall the forecast verified very well. The core idea going into this system was a sharp north–south gradient near Route 50 with a widespread 1–3″ zone to the south, and that is exactly how the storm played out.
The core idea going into this event was that areas south of Route 50 had the best chance of seeing a widespread 1–3 inches of snow, with a rapid cutoff in totals north of D.C. That verified very well. Southern Maryland and central Virginia saw 2–3.5 inches, with localized 3–4 inch totals around Charlottesville and into the Blue Ridge. Closer to the D.C. metro, reports mostly came in between 1–2 inches, and amounts dropped off quickly as you headed north toward Baltimore and the MD/PA line.
One part of the forecast that did not come to pass was the number of school closures. Many local districts opted for delays instead, despite snow-covered roads early on. This is unusual — in fact, it’s the first time in quite a while that we’ve not seen widespread closures for a setup like this, especially when an inch or two falls right during the morning commute.
Outside of the school-call surprise, the forecast matched the storm extremely well: timing, placement of the snow band, the 1–3 inch zone, and the cutoff north of D.C. all verified cleanly. The call for moderate travel impacts in our southern counties also played out exactly as anticipated. At the bottom of this post is a list of snow reports from the National Weather Service.
Overall, I’d give this forecast a solid “A–” grade. The placement of the 1–3″ zone, the focus on Southern Maryland and central Virginia as the main impact area, and the emphasis on a sharp gradient near Route 50 all verified very well. The main tweaks I’d make in hindsight would be to nudge the higher totals a bit more into the Blue Ridge and slightly trim amounts along parts of the Lower Shore.
