The hottest day of the year thus far is on tap across the region! This afternoon, many spots will look to make a run for the middle 90s as hot and humid air surges northward across the Mid-Atlantic. Our record high for today is 95° set back in 1934. We will likely either tie or outright break that record today!
We are off to a warm start already, with temperatures in the 70s just after sunrise. This will set the stage for temperatures to quickly rise into the 90s by lunchtime. Humidity will be on the rise, too, with dew points in the upper 60s/lower 70s. This will make it feel like we’re close to 100° this afternoon! Hazy skies will also be around.
The abrupt beginning of hot temperatures early in the season after a relatively cool spring brings an increased risk of heat illnesses unless proper precautions are taken for those working or recreating outdoors.
Since many outdoor events are planned this weekend in the region, be aware of the heat, and take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside this weekend. Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Plan to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, and seek shade from the sun. Schedule frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments and stay hydrated with non-alcoholic beverages.
The chance of rain is quite low across the region today. A couple of showers and storms cannot be ruled out back to the west for mountain communities. However, we will lack atmospheric forcing to see that rain threat migrate eastward. The chance of rain comes to our region tomorrow afternoon and evening.
