Wednesday’s Forecast: Excessive Heat and Humidity

Brought to you by G&H Jewelers, Inc.

We have a hot and humid one on tap for today across the region. Temperatures were only allowed to drop down into the lower to middle 70s overnight, which will help to set the stage for today’s heat. By lunchtime temperatures are likely to be pressing into the 90s. We will look to max out in the middle to upper 90s this afternoon.

With high temperatures and high humidity, it will feel much warmer than it actually is. Heat Indices across the region will be sent near 105° for a few hours this afternoon. This is why the National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for our entire region today (see slide 2, below). Be prepared to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

The combination of heat and humidity today will help to prime the atmosphere for storm development this afternoon. While we will be humid here at the surface, dry air will try to work into the middle-levels of the atmosphere– about 5,000 feet above our heads. This will try to cap and limit the coverage of storms. With that in mind, we likely will not see a wide coverage of storms. However, any storms that get going could get strong to severe with the unstable airmass we have. The primary timing of storms looks to be from 1-8pm this afternoon. Our Chesapeake’s Bounty Futurecast shows this potential well.

With all of this in mind, the Storm Prediction Center has placed our region under a Level 1 Marginal Risk of seeing severe weather. This means that a couple of severe storms do indeed look possible across our region. The primary threats look to be damaging wind gusts up to 60mph, large hail up to 1-1.5″, and localized flash flooding.
