Winter has fully settled in across the region as a surge of cold air and gusty winds takes hold today. While temperatures alone are cold, it’s the wind that’s making it feel especially brutal.

Strong northwesterly winds are ushering in some of the coldest air we’ve felt in a while, with gusts up to 25 mph at times. Morning wind chills dropped into the single digits and even below zero in spots, and despite sunshine this afternoon, it will continue to feel much colder than the thermometer suggests. Winds ease later today, but temperatures remain firmly below average.

When winds are light, our bodies trap a thin layer of warmth near the skin that helps keep us insulated. Gusty winds strip that layer away, allowing heat to escape much faster — which is why it can feel dangerously cold even when temperatures aren’t extreme. This is how wind chill works, and why limiting exposure, covering skin, and dressing in layers is so important on days like today.

We are also still monitoring the winter storm potential for this weekend! The latest European model continues to show strong, cold high pressure to the north, which will play a major role in how this weekend’s storm evolves. In this setup, the storm slows and strengthens off the Carolina coast, with any northward movement dependent on how firmly that cold high holds in place. Even small shifts in the storm’s track could mean big differences in who sees wintry weather and who does not. While it’s still too early to pin down exact impacts, confidence remains high that a storm will be present somewhere along the East Coast, and I’ll continue to monitor trends closely.

Stay with JB Weather for the latest information on impacts here in Southern Maryland and across the Mid-Atlantic.
