Summer isn’t letting up just yet. High temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 90s, with heat index values reaching 100-105° in parts of the I-95 corridor. At the same time, smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to filter into the region, leading to increasingly hazy skies and reduced air quality. While the thickest smoke arrives Friday, today will already feature noticeable haze with Code Orange Air Quality Alerts in effect for parts of the region.

As we head into the late afternoon and evening, a weak cold front will sag south toward the Mason-Dixon Line. This may be enough to spark isolated to scattered thunderstorms, mainly across southern Pennsylvania, northern Maryland, and into New Jersey.

⚠️ The catch? The smoke may actually limit how many storms can form by reducing daytime heating. If storms do develop, however, the atmosphere is primed to support a few strong to severe storms capable of:
💨 Damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph
🧊 Isolated large hail
⛈️ Storms tracking southeast through the evening
For most of Southern Maryland, the chance of seeing storms remains low, but we’ll be watching anything that develops to our north in case it holds together while moving southeast.
Bottom Line: Expect another hot, humid, and hazy day. Keep an eye on air quality if you’re spending extended time outdoors, and if storms develop this evening, those in northern Maryland and southern Pennsylvania should be prepared for a few isolated severe storms.
