The thick plume of Canadian wildfire smoke that has impacted much of the Northeast this week is now shifting south into the Mid-Atlantic as the jet stream dips farther south behind today’s cold front.

While skies have already appeared hazy today, the worst air quality is expected overnight into Friday, when northerly winds transport thicker smoke into Maryland, Virginia, DC, and surrounding areas.

⚠️ Air Quality Alerts
🔴 Code RED – Maryland
🟣 Code PURPLE – Central Pennsylvania
These levels mean the air is unhealthy, and in some areas very unhealthy, especially for: Children, older adults, anyone with asthma, COPD, or heart/lung disease. Everyone should consider limiting prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity on Friday. If you notice smoke, haze, or the smell of burning outdoors, reduce your time outside and keep windows closed when possible.

The smoke should gradually begin to improve later this weekend as winds shift and a more unsettled weather pattern develops.
🌫️ Bottom Line:
• Thick wildfire smoke settles into the region tonight.
• Friday will feature widespread haze and reduced air quality.
• Maryland is under a Code RED Air Quality Alert.
• Sensitive groups should avoid outdoor activity, and everyone should limit strenuous exercise outdoors.
Stay weather aware, and if you have respiratory concerns, be sure to check your local air quality before spending extended time outside.
