Looking Ahead: Heat Holds On… But Smoke Moves In

Brought to you by Chesapeake Orthodontics

The heat dome remains firmly in control through Thursday, keeping temperatures well into the 90s with heat index values between 100° and 105°. While today should end up being the hottest day of the stretch, temperatures will remain well above average through the end of the workweek.

The biggest change comes Friday. As the center of high pressure slides southwest, the jet stream dips farther south across the Great Lakes and Northeast. That shift opens the door for smoke from the ongoing Canadian wildfires to spread into the Mid-Atlantic.

🌫️ What does that mean?
• Hazy skies will become more noticeable Friday.
• Air quality could deteriorate, especially for sensitive groups.
• Thicker smoke may actually shave a few degrees off afternoon temperatures by limiting sunshine—but it won’t eliminate the heat entirely.

Looking ahead, a weakening cold front settles toward the region late Thursday into Friday before becoming the focus for a much more active weather pattern this weekend.

⛈️ Weekend thunderstorms return, with scattered storms possible beginning Thursday evening, increasing Friday night into Saturday. If enough sunshine develops Saturday, some storms could become strong to severe with damaging winds, large hail, and even an isolated tornado.

Bottom Line:
🔥 Heat continues through Friday.
🌫️ Canadian wildfire smoke arrives Friday with hazy skies and potential air quality concerns.
⛈️ Storm chances ramp up this weekend as the pattern finally begins to break down.
