Cold Times Ahead… But What About Snow?

As we have talked about, we are going to see a flip to a much colder pattern for (at least) the first half of January. This is thanks to a deep dip in the Jet Stream. This will lead to a prolonged cold blast with highs being stuck in the 30s. But… what about snow? Well…

We will need to see if any energy from the south and west can be picked up and brought north. If so, this could be the kicker to allow for a winter storm. However, if the Jet Stream is too far south then any storms will be suppressed to the south.

Between January 5th-7th we will see a system bring the cold air. With a lack of initial cold air, we will need to see how much cold air and precip there is for any wintry weather. It’s possible that the storm tracks too far north and brings rain or tracks too south and misses us.

By the January 8th-11th time frame, we will play the game of how far north a southern system can get. Again, will the cold air suppress the system so far south that it misses the Mid-Atlantic all altogether?

All of this is unclear, and there will not be sound answers for days.

With that said, we will have the first ingredient for winter weather… which is cold air. But can we get systems to work with the cold air is the question! We shall see. There is sure to be plenty of hype and clickbait about this pattern! Stay tuned for sound reporting.
