Forecast: More snow possible this Weekend… No, I’m not kidding!

Many parts of the southern Mid-Atlantic just recorded 6-12″ of snow as our season’s first winter storm in nearly 2 years impacted the region on Monday. We will not get much of a break from the winter weather as another round of snow looks possible late Friday into Saturday.

We will see a storm develop along the coast late this week, bringing widespread snow and ice to areas like north Texas and Arkansas. As the storm works eastward, we will need to monitor whether the system can merge with the northern Jet Stream. doing this would allow the storm to both become stronger and track further north. If this does not happen, the storm will stay weaker and to the south.

American Model depiction of the storm (Powered by WeatherBell)

The American Model favors a stronger system that is able to track a bit more to the north. With this scenario, we would see snow overspread the region after sunset on Friday and potentially become heavy early Saturday morning. Several inches of snow would be possible.

The European Model has favored keeping this storm focused to the south. This model does not merge the system with the northern Jet Stream, leading to a weaker system. This would mean only light snow for our region Friday night into Saturday morning. Small amounts of snow would be possible with this.

It’s a bit early to say which option will ultimately end up playing out. We will need to monitor atmospheric trends over the next couple of days as they will ultimately determine what happens. In the meantime, stay away from posters that are touting this as a “huge blizzard.” That is far from certain and may not even be favored.
