Tuesday’s School Odds: Incoming Cold Could Cause Delays

Brought to you by Chesapeake Orthodontics

Sunday’s system brought a mix of rain and some accumulating snow–mainly focused northwest of I-95. Behind this system, conditions have turned quite cold and icy, with several slick spots developing on roads. Wind Chills tomorrow morning are set to bottom out around, if not just below, 0°. The mix of lingering snow impacts and the cold will likely cause school closures and delays for Tuesday.

Areas that saw 4-7″+ of snow northwest of I-81 have seen blowing and drifting snow linger through the day as temperatures have remained cold. These are the zones where delays are likely and closings are possible for Tuesday. I would expect these for the districts along I-81 and the Mason-Dixon Line.

Areas just west of the Blue Ridge did see some snow on Sunday, but not nearly as much. However, some snow impacts and tomorrow’s cold will likely cause delays. I would not rule out closures, but they are not likely. These delays are the most likely from I-81 to the I-95 corridor.

Elsewhere, along the coastal plain, the lingering black ice and cold temperatures may cause some delays. Areas in southern Maryland, Tidewater Virginia, and the Delmarva will likely not be as cold as areas northwest, which makes this a bit difficult to call. In these zones, I would give delays a 50/50 shots.

Cold outside? Avoid the risk of frostbite and hypothermia by dressing in layers, covering exposed skin, and limiting time outdoors. If someone might be experiencing either condition, seek medical attention immediately — and know your actions.
