After an exceptionally dry spring and start to summer, the pattern has finally shifted. Over the past week, repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms have delivered 1-3″ of rainfall across much of the region, with some communities receiving even more. Keep in mind this map is a broad estimate and doesn’t capture the localized 4-6″+ totals that occurred where thunderstorms repeatedly tracked over the same locations.

The recent rainfall has certainly been welcome, helping improve soil moisture, streamflows, and reducing fire danger. However, our region remains in a Level 3 “Extreme” Drought, and we still have a long way to go. The latest estimates suggest we still need roughly 12 to 14 inches of rainfall over the next three months to completely erase the current drought.
The good news? We’re finally making progress. While this week’s rainfall won’t end the drought, it appears to have stalled its worsening trend. Instead of watching conditions continue to deteriorate, we’re beginning to stabilize them. With more opportunities for showers and thunderstorms in the forecast over the coming days, we’ll be watching closely to see if Mother Nature can continue chipping away at the rainfall deficit.
